Still Scary After All These Years
By Margaret Kohut
When I was very young, my oldest sister would read to me constantly - usually books of which my mom disapproved. H.P. Lovecraft was one of these books that mom said was too scary for kids. She was probably right; Lovecraft scared the living hell out of me as a kid. You know what? He still does. His famous "Cthulhu Mythos" is truly a masterful creation of "Elder Gods" who existed before mankind and want, again, to break through their dimensional barrier and extinguish mankind. "The Dunwich Horror,"" and "Shadow Over Innsmouth" represent a splendid (and horribly scary)sample of the terrifying stores around which he threatened the Earth with the Elder Gods.
This book has it all - Lovecraft's best works that are guaranteed to give you a weird, eerie feeling, making you especially careful where you travel in the New England deep woods. "Like a man who walks a lonely road doth walk in fear and dread, because he knows that close behind, a fearsome fiend doth tread."
Best,
Vienna

Decent Formatting for Those Who Don't Demand Finesse
By Robespierre
In the interests of disclosure, let me say that I'm a writer and editor by trade. I have had nothing to do with any editions of Lovecraft whatsoever, but my way of looking at e-books is definitely informed by the publishing side.
When I first bought this Halcyon edition of Lovecraft in 2010, I was new to e-books and amazed to be able to purchase the nearly complete stories of Lovecraft for ninety-nine cents.
Two years later, I've been exposed to the painstaking work that indie editors and formatters do with material from the Gutenberg Project -- taking that material, comforming it page by page to sanctioned text editions and improving the results endlessly over several versions over a period of years. They approach classics not as mercenaries but rather as Trappist monks devoting their lives to self-effacing perfectionism.
Having been spoiled by that kind of donated work by people like ghostyjack at Mobile Read, I returned to this Kindle edition again by Halcyon expecting a similar level of quality. Stuck at a friend's house with only my old Kindle Keyboard for reading, I decided to peruse "The Colour out of Space" for old time's sake.
Never mind the lack of finesse in the Halcyon edition's workmanlike formatting -- newspaper and magazine titles not in italics, double dashes for em dashes, British spelling not always preserved, squeezed ellipses with no distinction between four-point (for sentences) and three (for fragments and continuations) -- the real shock was in the text itself and the contents of the ToC. Homonyms and the misspellings of complicated words were occasionally left as is. Besides which, the e-book version I prefer is in five volumes -- collaborations, stories, essays, poems and juvenilia -- comprises everything by Lovecraft that is available legally in the States in the public domain, and is even free.
I certainly don't mind spending ninety-nine cents for someone else's hard work, but the reading experience I've found elsewhere is superior. I can recommend this version to people who don't adore the look and feel of the various conventions of layout and formatting that tend to accompany printed books. Regrettably, I can't recommend the Halcyon edition to people like me, who are troubled by homonyms, distracted by double dashes and otherwise yanked out of Lovecraft's spell by the artifacts of formatting and the occasional typos of scans.

Definitive vs Complete
By jcg
Seems that people like to put words like "Complete" or "Definitive" on their books to get you to buy it. If you look at the contents for this book (67 stories) and another one on Amazon with the word Complete in the title (63 stories), you might think you want this one (since it has 4 more stories and is $1 less at 1.99), but you would be wrong. Between the two of them, there are 73 stories. Complete is missing 10 that are in Definitive [Darkness, Dream House, Imprisoned with the Pharaohs, Medusa's Coil, Poetry of the Gods, The Alchemist, The Beast in the Cave, The Crawling Chaos, The Horror at Martin's Beach, Through the Gates of the Silver Key] -- and Definitive is missing 4 (actually has 69, not 67) that are in Complete [Ibid, Old Bugs, The History of the Necronomicon, The Thing in the Moonlight]. Maybe there's another title that has even more stories ...
