Best Basic cookbook in my library.

I have dozens of cookbooks but when I'm looking for a basic recipe that I can COUNT ON to turn out right, I always end up taking out the 1963 edition of this book (I also have a later edition that's not nearly as good).

Wonderful Cookbook

My mom swears by this cookbook and has been using it for years. I got her a new copy as a gift because the one she had was so beaten up. This is a good cookbook because it had a ton of original recipes and gives great beginner instructions for cooking. It doesn't just assume everyone knows how to roast a leg of lamb or make a pie crust.

This book also gives the old school recipes that use lard, etc. Not something that you would want to use often; but it's nice if you want to make something the way mom or grandma used to make it.

The Great Cookbook I Grew Up With

I kept on trying to remember the cookbook my mother used when I was growing up. My sister finally suggested that it was the McCall's Cook Book. I searched book sellers and found THE cookbook from my childhood. Published by Random House in 1963, when I was 12. I got it and, funny, I remembered it as having a green cover, but it is actually blue-green. Favorite childhood recipes: Clove Cake, Turkey Tetrazzini, Corn Fritters, Blueberry Peach Pie, Hearty Beef-Vegetable Soup, Crispy Oven-fried Chicken. So glad to own this book again. Had a copy but gave it away in a fit of Vegetarianism. Don't care that the cover is falling off. It is a treasure. Why hasn't Random House re-released this as a nostalgic cookbook as other publishers have? If you find this in a used book store or online grab it!
